Living the Virtues Series: Humility with Others

November 08, 2014

Humility with Others

Humility, by definition, is a modest regard for oneself. It is, in essence, a condition of humbleness. Humility with others is seeing eye-to-eye on many levels. It is knowing that we are tied to each other, in genetic make-up and awareness. This clear perspective that we are all one, is a view that not many people give into. Humility with others is putting one’s desires aside and being unselfish. This virtue is so difficult to encapsulate because there is a notion of entitlement in today’s world. It is seen in children and adults. This momentum of “Well, I deserve it,” is killing humility. Why do you think you deserve it?

What is it like to recognize as human beings that we are all truly equal? Montesquieu was a French philosopher who is known for his rigorous work in social enlightenment and authority. It is more beneficial to stand with people than perceiving that they are below you. Montesquieu’s quote:“To become truly great, one has to stand with people, not above them,” seems to hit the nail on the head. In your life, you have come in contact with a person who gives the impression that he or she is above you. Maybe his behavior is derisive, or maybe she perceives you to be uneducated. Sometimes he or she gives off the impression that they have all the answers and so you, then, don’t equate.

When people you are around give airs of superior stature it creates a weakness of untruth within the body. It means that you will react to it through anger, resentment, fear, or guilt. Since you know what it feels like to be on that side of the scenario, what do you think of the other side? You have the ability to experience life to the fullest. You can experience happiness, peace, joy when you identify with humility. You need to address your personal perceptions at this moment in time. There are greater wisdom and answers beyond all comprehensive knowledge…in essence, the only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. For example, you may have a degree from an ivy league school that you loudly tout, but you may be missing out on one of life’s biggest treasures.

Do you practice humility with others? Do you treat others as equals? If not, why not? Practicing humility with others will give you a greater, more fulfilling life experience. There are short affirmations that you can practice daily that can help you implement humility in your life. This week’s affirmations are: “Each day I practice humility with others, learning along the way.” “I admit to not practicing humility in the past and make a conscious effort to be more humble.” “It pleases me to acknowledge that we are all one.” “I put my desires aside and focus on others.” Practice saying these little nuggets to open up a world of positive possibilities. Thanks for reading. InJoy your day!
