How do you think you can execute your best ability, to win at whatever you are doing? As a mental trainer and hypnotherapist, I can tell you that the ability to tap into and access the mental levels of your mind can make some significant positive changes in your life and sport. You cannot get away from your behaviors, habits, attitudes, mindsets, reactions, fears and expectations, when you are out there in your life or sport. They are part of who you are, and stay with you on a day-to-day basis. You might not even be aware of them until you face extreme pressure, either from yourself or others’ expectations. But when you try to perform your sport under any kind of pressure, you don’t really have much of a chance to execute your best ability if you have not been working on the mental side of yourself beforehand.
It is very difficult to rise to your best ability if you have not been working on all of your skills. Training yourself in all areas necessary to execute your best ability and win, at whatever you do, is vital to your success. So in this article, I take a look at one of my hypnosis sport product suggestions, as a free mental training tip, that pertains to helping you execute every shot to the best of your ability. It is:
“I execute my shot to the best of my ability.”
I created this for golfers, but it applies to every sport and basically everything in your life. The athletes I have worked with, whether they had mental training with anyone else before me or not, tend to lean in the direction of their mechanics when it comes to executing shots to the best of their ability. Meaning, if you were to ask them how they felt they performed in their last shot, they would give you a blow by blow of their mechanics. Then let’s say I am an instructor and I told them to do the best they could on a particular shot. Typically they would focus 90% of their effort on the mechanics – if not 100%. They give very little consideration to the mental aspect, even though it is vital to executing their best ability.
So the first step to executing every shot to the best of your ability is to recognize that it takes a lot more than just mechanics to make it happen. The mechanics are only a very small element when you look at the broader picture. Several factors actually go into every shot, when you take into account the environment, the people around you, and your preparation up to that point (in a bunch of different areas – not just whether or not you practiced). But a lot of athletes will say “I’ve practiced mechanics every day” and think that should be enough. What about preparation and the surrounding environment – not just the weather and land, but the actual surroundings? What happened to you in the last 5 minutes, hours or day before, including what you think is about to happen, the people in your squad, group or those playing in front or behind you, all contribute to your ability. Your reaction and thoughts about those situations effect whether or not you execute every shot to the best of your ability as well.
As you look at all of those factors, you can see it is extremely important that you work on yourself, your perceptions, fears, doubts, attitudes, expectations, regrets and worries, in order for you to truly execute every shot to the best of your ability. Since you take all of that with you into the moment you attempt to execute your shot, your level of performance will drop significantly if you have not trained well in how to deal with it all. Additionally, how well you have slept and eaten, your level of endurance from exercising regularly and keeping fit, how well hydrated you are; they too affect your ability to perform well and execute every shot to the best of your ability.
When you consider your personal relationships and thoughts around them, especially if you had some disagreement or argument before the game, they come with you into every shot. Thoughts about yourself and previous performance, your previous hole or round, previous station, previous event, previous year – all of it comes with you. So the moment of your shot is not as pure and innocent as just your mechanics. There is a lot more work to be done and elements to be looked at, in order for you to perform well, or execute every shot to the best of your ability.
This can be very overwhelming, so it does need to be broken down for you to take small steps at a time. But at least start working on all of these areas so you can diligently perfect your abilities. Mindfully and diligently tackle or tweak one thing at a time, making progress over time, so that each time you do perform and execute a shot, you bring a new and better you to that experience. That is what we are looking at here. That is how you can execute every shot to the best of your ability.
In order to affirm and believe this statement: “I execute every shot to the best of my ability”, you do need to work on all the areas I mentioned, but also have the belief that you are executing every shot to the best of your ability. You must have that belief beyond any other thinking about yourself – more than anything else, when you are about to execute the shot. You must believe that you truly are performing to the best of your ability at that time, and have done everything you could to prepare for that moment. That will really help you execute every shot to the best of your ability.
I am not saying you sacrifice everything else in your life to achieve that belief. You still need to have balance in your life, where you take care of all areas and therefore feel serenity that you truly are doing the best you can in all areas. If you believe you are practicing as much as you reasonably can, with balance in your life, then you should feel that you are performing to the best of your ability in all areas. If you do that, then when you get to that moment of executing a shot, you bring a belief system that you are ready and prepared to execute to the best of your ability at that time. Even though there may still be progress to be made and things you still need to work on (because there always will be), you are satisfied with your progress. Therefore, you believe you truly are ready to execute every shot to the best of your ability, and chances are, you will.
So as you can see, executing your shot to the best of your ability is actually much more complicated under the surface than what is visibly going on. But if you take this large chunk of information and begin to work on your mental training, it will definitely put you well above others in your sport. As I said initially, a large percentage of athletes focus just on their mechanics when it comes to executing every shot to the best of their ability. So this gives you a huge advantage over your competition if you realize there is much more to it and you start working on it. You will then begin to see progress in all the different areas of your golf game and life, and truly execute your shots to the best of your ability.
