The Motive of Kindness

May 22, 2015

Think about the word kindness. It has two different meanings. It is either a deed or a quality. Kindness can become its own motive. Motive is the “something” that causes action within us. When you are motivated by kindness, your characteristic or quality you possess will eventually make you kind. Eric Hoffer was quoted as saying: “Kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind.”

The Baddest Athletes

May 20, 2015

Athletes…we either love them or loathe them. Sometimes we loathe them until our compassion kicks in and realize there is a method to their madness. Other times, it’s merely because they were never held as a child (read below).  Still, whether or not their actions were legal, justified or down-right insane, it drew the attention. […]

Crossfit: To Be or Not To Be Dangerous

May 15, 2015

Crossfit.  It is everywhere.  I see it on Facebook, around town, in the news and on youtube.  You can always tell the people who just finished a Crossfit workout because they look like they are about to die.  Seriously.  Their hair is in sweaty tangles, their breathing is labored (probably from throwing-up their morning pea-protein shake), they have sweat stains all over their athletic apparel, and if you look closely in their eyes, they are screaming “GIVE ME A REST!”  Crossfit has been a contagious movement across the US.  It is well known for it’s ability to strengthen and condition one’s body by incorporating all kinds of crazy calisthenics.

Swing and Putting Stroke Made Easy

May 13, 2015

Today’s golf moment is all about the swing and stroke. Anyone who golfs, whether as a hobby or as a career, understands the importance of the swing and stroke. Both can make or break your score. So today, you will focus on this easy affirmation: “My swing and my putting stroke are easy, smooth & natural.” I have written about confidence in golf before, but honestly, confidence in any arena, in any sport is a huge part of your ability. If you don’t have confidence (and please don’t mistake this for ego) your overall performance suffers. So today, If you are not yet a confident golfer, I urge you to look back over my golf blogs and practice the affirmations on confidence before proceeding. If you are self-assured and confident, you can move onto the swing and stroke. You want your swing to feel natural. You want your stroke to be easy.

60 Second Meditation

May 06, 2015

Anyone who has ever felt vulnerable, raw, or shattered has felt an emotion so strong it’s likely to bring you down for days.  Life is full of twists and turns, ups and downs, and all the in-betweens.  Life can hand you a bowl-full of cherries or demand it’s pound of flesh.  Sometimes, our bodies get so wrought with emotions, it wears us thin, making not only our spirit vulnerable, but our immune systems as well.  I have previously written about the many benefits of meditation.  And if you are a believer or practice meditation, you know it can do wonders for your body, mind, and spirit…however, not everyone has time to sit in a meditative state.  So these cool cats at PixelThoughts put together a quick pick-me-up.  It is a 60 second meditation that will set you on the right path again.  I promise this is worthy of your time.  It will put everything back into perspective for you to carry on with your day.

Healing Thoughts: Our Mind-Body Connection

May 05, 2015

Humans experience an array of emotions, anything from happiness, to sadness to extreme joy and depression. Each one of these emotions creates a different feeling within the body. After all, our body releases different chemicals when we experience various things that make us happy and each chemical works to create a different environment within the body. For example if your brain releases serotonin, dopamine or oxytocin, you will feel good and happy. Conversely, if your body releases cortisol while you are stressed, you will have an entirely different feeling associated more with the body kicking into survival mode.

What about when we are thinking negative thoughts all the time? Or how about when we are thinking positive thoughts? What about when we are not emotionally charged to neither positive nor negative? Let’s explore how these affect our body and life.

Proof We Can Heal Ourselves

April 30, 2015

God created us.  God created every single cell in our bodies with the capability to heal.  Let me write that another way: Our bodies, our cells, have the ability to heal.  Even if you don’t believe in a higher power, from a scientific standpoint, any immunologist or microbiologist can tell you that cells can divide and conquer.  Our very nature is to heal. The problem comes when we try to listen to the doctors instead of our bodies.  Our bodies hold the answers to heal, if only we would listen.

Mindfulness As Effective As Antidepressants For Preventing Relapse

April 28, 2015

There’s been an increasingly compelling pile of evidence that mindfulness training has effects on both brain and behavior—and its potential for treating depression is among its more promising uses. A new study from the University of Oxford finds that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is just as effective as antidepressants for preventing a relapse of depression, which affects 50-80% of people who experience a first bout of depression. This may not be entirely surprising, since previous studies have hinted at similar results. But what’s encouraging here is that MBCT may be an effective way to wean people off even successful courses of antidepressants, should they want or need to get off them in the future, without the high risk of relapse.

Peak Your Performance: Take Care of Yourself

April 24, 2015

Being an athlete is not easy. Usually your performance centers around self-talk, which you may or may not realize. If that self-talk is negative, you can kiss your performance goodbye. I have made a lot of golf products with certain suggestions that really work in training your brain. These suggestions help make you aware of the self-talk within your mind. The more you repeat and reinforce something, the more it becomes an automatic behavior or thought pattern. These suggestions help you to be mindful. Think and speak in limitless ways. Today’s suggestion is: “I take care of myself and practice (mechanics & mental skills) frequently so I feel prepared & confident when I play. I take care on all levels- eat, sleep, hydrate, exercise, practice of mental skills & mechanical skills.”
